So, I'm thinking of stopping my querying for the time being (months, years) until the economy improves. I have nine outstanding queries. I think I'll see what comes of them, but wait to send out any more.
Anyone think I'm crazy?

I'm reading on other forums about how bad the book-selling industry is doing right now with the down economy. I'm hearing (reading) that agents and
editors are taking on very few new projects and selecting the ones they do take on with extreme care.

Yes. I think you should keep going, keep trying! Never, ever give up..not even for a little while.

My thinking is I want to wait until the market improves so you won't get a bunch of rejections that otherwise could be acceptances. There are only a finite
number of agents and publishing houses and if I exhaust them now, when they're not in the buying mood, I may have lost them possibly forever.
At least that's my thinking for the time being.

I thought of that too...hmm.. I would make Ellen answer you. I just keep thinking, what if someone else keeps going and steals your agent?

Probably won't happen. An agent won't refuse me just because she/he accepted someone else. If my book is good enough, they'll pick it up. I think
it will sink or swim on its own merits, not whether or not someone else is repped by some agent.

Paul is right about publishers cutting back right now. Still, they have to acquire manuscripts to keep publishing. The issue is commercial viability. It's
not enough to write a good book right now. You have to write a great one, and it needs a commercial hook. An agent is your absolute best bet to know if a
project is commercially viable, who might be interested, and if they're acquiring. So if you believe you've written that, keep looking for
representation.

Thanks Ellen. I think I'm just being realistic. I know my book is good in my eyes and to my critique group, but its probably not going to be a best-seller,
or even a mid-list dweller. Probably a bottom-end filler. So, for now, I think it's best to keep it on the shelf until prospects look better for such
novels.
