TV Show Writing |

Over the weekend, some friends and I were discussing what TV shows we watch. We kept coming back to the writing. My husband loves Dexter, the show about a
serial killer of serial killers. My friend Susan loves NCIS and Castle. She swears the writing on both shows is exceptional. My husband and I faithfully watch
Lost as much for the interwoven story threads as anything (though, to be honest, sometimes they feel disjointed and irritate me).

We hardly watch any TV. Occasionally, we watch Law and Order, or one of the CSI shows. I don't think too much about the writing, but quite often some of
the things that go on don't add up or make sense, or barely make sense if you stretch your imagination. I hate that, but overall the shows are fun, so I
ignore the inconsistencies.

Well, although I don't watch television, we do rent series and a couple of the series we're really into are NipTuck, True Blood, and Tutors. Sometimes
the writing in NipTuck makes you squinch up your nose but for the most part, I think all of those shows are well written. I've read the True Blood series
and I think the writers have done a good job adapting the book to the show.
I've come to the conclusion, crazy is one of those states of mind that we all share... Yeah, I'm talking to you, loony.

LOST. I think what the writing does better than most other shows is capture and then stay true to the characters. Hurley is Hurley whether he's talking to
a hallucination, hoarding food, or marching off into the jungle intent on getting something he wants. Likewise Sayid is Sayid whether he's torturing
someone, spending time with a woman he loves, or trying to decipher some code. Even when the characters do change, it's change that's consistent with
(what we know and suspect about) their characters. That doesn't mean that a character never surprises us on LOST, just that after the initial surprise we
think, "Okay, that's what I'd expect Charlie to do to someone who kidnapped his girlfriend and almost killed him."
The writers have had to pour on mystery while satisfying the viewers enough to keep them tuning in, a delicate balance. Compare the writing of the new show Flash Forward (trite, boring/slow-paced, reads like someone tried inserting a science fiction subplot into an episode of CSI) with the new V (clever, funny, well-paced). Sure, V has its shortcomings and it's closer to popcorn theatre than literature, but it delivers what it promises, something I don't find Flash Forward making good on. In fact, Flash Forward has already invalidated its premise, that people have seen "the future" during a collective blackout. The show it could have been is already far superior to the show they're broadcasting. It's a mess. |

Well, now I'm kind of glad that I didn't get a chance to see FlashForward. I thought it would be good. I've always enjoyed the writing of Criminal
Minds and The Dollhouse. I usually tend to pick shows that get cancelled fairly quickly. Rotten luck.

I rarely even turn on the TV anymore, so I don't have a clue what's on anymore. About the only TV show that I try to watch when I go home on breaks is
Ghost Hunters or Ghost Hunters International.

I know, they cancel all the best shows! Some favorites of mine from the last few seasons (Journeyman, New Amsterdam, etc) are all gone!
I do love the new V though. Flash Forward I still watch, but its frustrating to say the least.

Haven't caught the new V. I'd like to see it but at this point I'm probably going to have to wait for it to come on DVD before I see it. It seems
that's how I watch most shows. Torchwood, Doctor Who, NCIS, Jag, Castle, Family Guy, Battlestar Galactica & Keeping Up Appearances are ones I catch on
DVD more than on TV.
I do make an effort to watch Mythbusters when it's on. |

Castle is fantastic. However, I read the book "Heat Wave" that corresponded with the show, and the writing was horrible. It was very short, and
nearly unedited like they rushed it to get it out in time. It jumped around so much, like they dont have a clue, and the next paragraph they are interrogating
someone. It was ridiculous.

I no longer even try to watch the current shows because invariably I miss one and then I don't want to wtch any more until I see the one I missed and so
on. So I watch shows after the current season is over through my Netflix account. I'll have to put Castle on my list.

I had a feeling Heat Wave wasn't going to be that great. I'd still like to read it though I might not finish it. Maybe the next one will be better. I
hope so. They could have a really good thing if they take the time to do the books right.

I agree. This one was probably an idea they had late, and didnt have time to make it what it could have been.

I wanted to hate GLEE but it may be the best written shown I've ever seen; it's hilarious. The first season is so great I'm afraid there's
bound to be a drop-off next season.
Kings was excellent, but then you'd kind of expect that out of something originally dictated by God. LOST's writing is brilliant when it comes to weaving the character arcs, but gets a bit convoluted in the sci-fi aspects of the story. |
